Copiapo Info

Copiapó, capital city of Atacama Province in north central Chile, on the Copiapó River, 680 km (423 mi) north of Santiago and about 60 km (about 40 mi) from the Pacific coast. Copiapó lies in a small, fertile valley at 430 m (1400 ft) above sea level in a surrounding region of mountainous desert. The city was founded in 1540 and named for the Copayapu people living in the area. Destroyed by earthquakes in 1819 and 1822, Copiapó was damaged by another tremor in 1851. Much of Copiapó’s prosperity ended with the exhaustion of the nearby Chañarcillo silver mines. The city is linked with Caldera, a port on the coast, by the first railroad built in South America. Population (1999 estimate) 119,861(1992 estimate) 100,946.
