Bahía Blanca, city in eastern Argentina, in Buenos Aires Province, a seaport at the head of the Bahía Blanca (an arm of the Atlantic Ocean). The leading city of eastern Argentina, it is an important transshipping and commercial center, handling the large export trade in grain and wool from southern Buenos Aires Province, oil from Neuquén, and fruit from the Río Negro Valley. The National University of the South (1956) is in Bahía Blanca. The city was founded as a fort in 1828 and became commercially important after the construction of a railroad through the area in 1885. Population (1991) 260,096.

In the region of the Andes Mountain r the climate is cold and humid, with temperatures that oscillate between the 5 and 12 degrees Celsius and rains that reach 2,000 annual mm. In the mountainous zone, north for the Alumine lake, the climate is semi-arid, with rain between 150 and 300 mm. In the rest of the province it is cold, dry, windy and with inferior rains to 150 mm.
