(Cricuma is located in the State of Santa Catarina) Santa Catarina, state in southern Brazil, covering 95,442 sq km (36,850 sq mi). Santa Catarina is bordered on the north by the Brazilian state of Paraná, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, and on the west by Argentina. The Serra do Mar and Serra Geral mountain ranges lie near the coast. The western part of the state is made up of the flat uplands of the Serra Geral, which slopes gradually to the west. The climate in the coastal zone is hot and rainy, but frost and occasional snows occur in the highlands. The coastal rain forest changes to grasslands and pine forests in the western highlands.
Only the coastal areas of Santa Catarina contain old Portuguese settlements. German immigrants began to settle the inland area in the middle of the 19th century and their descendants still follow the social customs of their former homeland. Joinvile and Blumenau, situated in the Itajaí Valley, are the main cities of the interior.
The principal industries are metallurgy, food processing, lumbering, and pottery making. Santa Catarina is Brazil's main coal producer. Intensive agriculture is practiced in the interior, as well as ranching.
The chief ports are Itajaí and São Francisco do Sul. Florianópolis, the state capital, is located on the island of Santa Catarina, in the Atlantic Ocean off the east central coast. Population 5,356,360 (2000).
