Only the coastal areas of Santa Catarina contain old Portuguese settlements. German immigrants began to settle the inland area in the middle of the 19th century and their descendants still follow the social customs of their former homeland. Joinvile and Blumenau, situated in the Itajaí Valley, are the main cities of the interior.

The principal industries are metallurgy, food processing, lumbering, and pottery making. Santa Catarina is Brazil's main coal producer. Intensive agriculture is practiced in the interior, as well as ranching.

The chief ports are Itajaí and São Francisco do Sul. Florianópolis, the state capital, is located on the island of Santa Catarina, in the Atlantic Ocean off the east central coast. Population 5,356,360 (2000).
