Maceio Info
Maceió, the capital of the state of Alagoas in the northeast of Brazil, is a relaxed, modern city with some of the most beautiful and alluring beaches in all of South America. Add to this a tropical climate of endless sea and sun, proximity to cities such as Recife and Salvador, and easy access to the vast Amazon basin, and it's easy to see why Maceió makes an ideal setting for learning Portuguese. The city itself occupies the tip of a curved peninsula, and has an orla, or strip of in-town beaches, where many of the city's quality hotels and restaurants are found. If you don't like the sun or the water you'll be hard-pressed not to be swayed once you arrive...and if you do, then welcome to paradise.

Aracaju Info
Aracaju was founded in 1855, planned and sketched in the shape of a chessboard. It is now a modern city, with the old mansions and their backyards replaced little by little with skyscrapers. Considered one of the prettiest, Aracaju’s coastline is one of the main tourist attractions in the state. The coastal front has a steady breeze which cools the atmosphere by a few degrees, making the temperature just right.
Besides Atalaia beach, Aracaju coastal front is formed by eight other beaches: Coroa do Meio, Praia dos Artistas, Havaizinho, Aruana, Náufragos, Robalo, Mosqueiro and Prainha do Vaza Barris. Their greatest characteristic is the total absence of rocks and the nice temperature, perfect for the elderly and children.
Only five minutes crossing the waters, on Santa Luzia Island, we have access to Costa and Atalaia Nova beaches.
Aracaju food and drink prices are approximately 1/3rd of the price of the some western countries. This makes holidays and retirement affordable in Aracaju. The people are exceptionally friendly and crime is very low.
On Sergipe River margins, that runs alongside Aracaju, the mangrove thickets develop, forming extraordinary biological complexes that live together in balance with plants, fishes, crustaceans and birds. The river starts at Lagoa das Areias ( Sand Lagoon), in Serra de Boa Vista, Poço Redondo County, crosses the State from west to east and flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Its most important tributaries are Ganhamoroba River, Cotinguiba River, Sal River, Pitanga River, and Poxim River.
Many North East Coast of Brazil cities are short of water, hence the drive by many banks to push waters to the 'dry areas' The Sergipe River basin is the most important one in the State, providing water for Aracaju, as well as for the sugar cane plantation and cattle breeding in the area, through its tributaries Poxim and Pitanga.
Aracaju, located at the mouth of Sergipe River, is also the largest industrial area of the State. Aracaju's airport will be opened to international access during 2004 - this will open the flight paths between between Sergipe and Europe and other worldwide destinations making travel time the same as Europe to Miami.
