Ciudad Bolivar Info
Ciudad Bolivar is one of the Venezuelan cities that keep more history on its streets, squares and museums. Formerly named Angostura because of its location on the narrowest part of the majestic Orinoco. Site of many independence battles and one of the first regions in the country to be freed from the Spanish bondage; it was declared interim capital of the newly formed republic in 1818 by the Liberator Simon Bolivar. From here, a year later Bolivar addressed the country his famous "Discurso de Angostura" (Angostura's Speech), in which he gave up all the special powers The Congress had granted him and laid out the new republic paradigm.
A place worthy of being visited is La Casa de San Isidro (San Isidro's House), property of the Cornieles family, often visited by the Liberator and where he wrote the Angostura's Speech. Presently transformed into a museum where you can glance at the colonial lifestyle and admire the gorgeous surrounding gardens.
A most attracting place in the city is the Bolivar Square surrounded by The Angostura Congress House, The Cathedral with its peculiar salmon color, The Piar House where Manuel Piar was kept prisoner before being executed, The Parish House and the colonial Governor's House today's Town Hall.

Uriman Bolivar Info
Canaima national park is located in the south-east of Venezuela in Bolívar State (Piar and Roscio districts). The park protects the Venezuelan (north-western) section of the Guayana Shield. It is bordered by the Río Carrao and the Lema Mountain Range to the north, the Pakaraima Range as far as the Brazilian border to the south, the headwaters of the Río Venamo and the Roraima Range as far as Roraima-tepui to the east, and the Río Caroní to the west. The nearest city is Ciudad Bolívar some 600km to the north.
The park is sparsely inhabited, mostly by Pemón, with less than one person per km² and a total population of 10,000. The Pemón live mainly in the eastern sector of the park in scattered communities of 40-100 individuals. Many Pemón maintain traditional lifestyles of swidden agriculture, hunting and gathering. They also trade artifacts. They now have access to drinking water, electricity, schools and basic medical care (Government of Venezuela, 1993).
The forests and savannas have been occupied for 10,000 years by various groups of Amerindians of the Carib family, collectively known as the Pemón. Indeed, the savanna formations of the Gran Sabana itself are almost certainly a product of regular burning by indigenous inhabitants in prehistoric times. Two archaeological sites, containing various hand-fashioned stone tools estimated to be 9000 years old, have been found in the park (Government of Venezuela, 1993).
