Sogndal still is a nice place to live. Today the town is the regional centre in Sogn with 6,852 inhabitants. The two thousand students add to the youthful character of the town. During the summer, tourists from all around the world visit Sogndal and they are fascinated by the contrasts the region offers.
With more than 2,000 students Sogndal is the educational centre of Sogn and Fjordane County. Sogndal offers a well-organised student welfare and a wide range of leisure activities, all within walking distance. Students from all over Norway come to Sogndal and they create a level of activity, which is hard to find in places of similar size. Sogn and Fjordane University College is one of the main employers in Sogndal. The Western Norway Research Institute is located within the campus but it is an independent institution, with special expertise in information communication and technology systems, environmental and organisational research. In addition to the University College, Sogndal has a large upper secondary school and the oldest still running folk high school in the country.
Sogndal is conveniently located as a starting point for trips to mountains, fjords and glaciers. During the summer tourists arrive in great numbers to experience the Sogn region. The 1,400 beds in its hotels, pensions, cabins and private accommodation, enable the town to host large conferences.

Brønnøysund is a coastal town with approximately 5000 inhabitants, being the administrative and commercial centre of the municipality Brønnøy in Norway. It has daily visits by the Hurtigruten (Coastal Express), northbound at night and southbound in the afternoon. It has its own airport, Brønnøysund lufthavn (BNN), and a direct eastbound connection to the E6 highway. It is best known in Norway as the location of the Brønnøysund Register Centre.
