Qikiqtarjuaq Info
Broughton Island / Qikiqtarjuaq
"big island" formerly Broughton Island
Wildlife and the scenery draw visitors to Qikiqtarjuaq, but Qikiqtarjuaq is also often referred to as the iceberg capital of the world. Pronounced "kik-kik-tar-jwak" the glacier-crowned fiord coast of Baffin Island is spectacular and sightings of icebergs and whales are common.
Guided boat, dog team and snowmobile tours take visitors north and south of Qikitarjuaq in Davis Strait. Outfitters will help you locate superb hiking areas or provide transport to the northern trailhead of Auyuittuq National Park.
What to See and Do
Numerous walking trails provide the opportunity to view majestic arctic scenery up close. An inukshuk overlooking the community is a popular walking destination. The moutains of Baffin Island are the highest in North America east of the Rockies, and offer beautiful vistas for outdoor enthusiasts. Technical and sport climbers from around the world seek out Mount Thor, a 4,000 foot sheer cliff and its 1,000-metre overhanging west face.
Spring is the perfect time of year to snowmobile or dog-sled to Auyuittuq National Park Reserve, north Pangnirtung Fiord, Padle Fiord, Maktak Fiord and Durban Island. It is also the perfect time of year to arrange trips with an experienced outfitter to see the floes, icebergs, and a wide variety of arctic wildlife including seals, polar bears, narwals and bowhead whales.
For those interested in exploring Inuit culture, handmade traditional Intuit and modern clothing including sealskin parkas and kamiit (boots) are local specialities.
