Atlanta Info
For many, Atlanta is just the bonfire background to one of cinema's most famous clinches, but the city's profile is rising. Long known as the 'Capital of the New South', Atlanta has benefited in recent years from a booming economy, the 1996 Olympics and a baseball dynasty.
The city has suffered from overzealous college get-downs and the relentless development that has razed much of what it hasn't converted to shopping malls. But there are offbeat neighbourhoods to explore and old-fashioned towns nearby where you can still savour something of bygone days.
Since being rebuilt after the Civil War, downtown Atlanta has been transformed by waves of development and is now a thoroughly modern metropolis. For a glimpse of the past head to Fairlie-Poplar, which was the city's commercial centre 100 years ago. Its 20-odd blocks are lined with buildings constructed between the 1880s and WWI.
Located in the southeastern region of the US, Atlanta is in the northwestern quadrant of the state of Georgia (of which it is the capital). It's about 320km (200 mi) northwest of the Atlantic and about 440km (275mi) north of the Gulf of Mexico.
The sprawling Atlanta metropolitan area is criss-crossed by I-20 and I-75/85, with I-285 forming the 'Perimeter' (as locals call it). Peachtree St is the main north-south artery, but be aware that some 40 other streets, avenues, roads and lanes are also called Peachtree.
The centre of the city is Five Points, the star-shaped intersection formed by several major streets. East of downtown, Sweet Auburn is the city's main African-American neighbourhood. North of Sweet Auburn is Little Five Points, the centre of Atlanta's college and boho set. North of downtown, Midtown is an upmarket entertainment and nightlife area. The West End, west of downtown, is Atlanta's oldest neighbourhood. The Olympic stadium and Grant Park are respectively south and southeast of downtown.

Jacksonville Info
Situated in the great double loop of the St Johns River and with long established lumber and coffee
industries, JACKSONVILLE, the largest city in the US – 841 square miles – is suspicious of anything that
might upset its hard-working tradition. Pleasure seekers are expected to stick to the beaches. Even the
film industry, which came here seeking a base in the 1910s, was scared off by the religious zeal of the
locals and settled in California instead. The growing size of the white-collar sector has eased the visual
blight of years of heavy industry, and efforts have been made to enhance Jacksonville's appeal by creating
parks and riverside boardwalks.
However, the sheer size of the city dilutes its character and makes it
impossible to walk around and get a real feel for the city.
In the beginning, pilots used the hard-packed sand of Jacksonville's beaches for runways. They were plenty long, but too far from downtown to be convenient. In those days, there were no scheduled airline flights and the railroad was king in Jacksonville. By 1923, local pilots began using a small grassy strip called Paxon Field, on the city's western outskirts (site of present-day Paxon High School). At the same time it was realized that a true airport was needed, one that could support large air mail and passenger aircraft. A thoroughly modern Jacksonville Municipal Airport was built in 1926 adjacent to the City Prison Farm on North Main Street.
