Greensboro Info

KGSO1

Saura and Keyauwee Indians were the earliest inhabitants of Piedmont North Carolina. The first settlers in the Greensboro area were mostly Germans, Quakers of Welsh and English descent and Scotch-Irish who came to the Piedmont from Northern colonies. These pioneers worked the land and shaped the future for generations to come. Permanent settlement began around 1740.

KGSO2

To thwart the invasion of North Carolina by 1,900 redcoats under Lord Cornwallis, American Major General Nathanael Greene deployed 4,400 rebels in three battle lines at Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. Cornwallis held the field after an intense, two-hour fight, but lost one-quarter of his army, which hastened his eventual defeat at Yorktown seven months later.

In 1807, the residents of the area voted to create a new, more centrally located seat of government. The following year, elected officials mapped out a 42-acre tract of land, paid $98 to purchase it and suggested that it be named Greensborough after the patriot commander Nathanael Greene.

The new town prospered and it wasn’t long before it became a center for educational and economic opportunities. Greensboro was and continues to be a "chosen center."

Atlanta Info

KATL1

For many, Atlanta is just the bonfire background to one of cinema's most famous clinches, but the city's profile is rising. Long known as the 'Capital of the New South', Atlanta has benefited in recent years from a booming economy, the 1996 Olympics and a baseball dynasty.

The city has suffered from overzealous college get-downs and the relentless development that has razed much of what it hasn't converted to shopping malls. But there are offbeat neighbourhoods to explore and old-fashioned towns nearby where you can still savour something of bygone days.

Since being rebuilt after the Civil War, downtown Atlanta has been transformed by waves of development and is now a thoroughly modern metropolis. For a glimpse of the past head to Fairlie-Poplar, which was the city's commercial centre 100 years ago. Its 20-odd blocks are lined with buildings constructed between the 1880s and WWI.

KATL2

Located in the southeastern region of the US, Atlanta is in the northwestern quadrant of the state of Georgia (of which it is the capital). It's about 320km (200 mi) northwest of the Atlantic and about 440km (275mi) north of the Gulf of Mexico.

The sprawling Atlanta metropolitan area is criss-crossed by I-20 and I-75/85, with I-285 forming the 'Perimeter' (as locals call it). Peachtree St is the main north-south artery, but be aware that some 40 other streets, avenues, roads and lanes are also called Peachtree.

The centre of the city is Five Points, the star-shaped intersection formed by several major streets. East of downtown, Sweet Auburn is the city's main African-American neighbourhood. North of Sweet Auburn is Little Five Points, the centre of Atlanta's college and boho set. North of downtown, Midtown is an upmarket entertainment and nightlife area. The West End, west of downtown, is Atlanta's oldest neighbourhood. The Olympic stadium and Grant Park are respectively south and southeast of downtown.
