November 1, 2004,
It was a short night at Norfolk. After arriving late, I decided to set off early the next morning for Greensboro. John is in the south of Florida and I really want to join him to fly around there together.
I made my preparations for the flight plan during the night, and couldn't put the dumb idea out of my mind that I wanted to mess with the American authorities again. How? By flying over Langley, headquarters of the CIA. I'm sure I'll end up in a file somewhere in an American government agency!.
Engine start-up was at 9:39. I received clearance to take off from runway 23. I had to « hold short »
for a United Airlines on final. The climb up to cruise altitude was very interesting, because of being able to look down on all the port installations there. I was a bit disappointed though not to see any ships, Norfolk being the largest American naval base.
I flew directly overhead Langley, but found it completely deserted. I was really surprised.
The flight was without incident. A bit of traffic around Raleigh-Durham and a descent in reduced visibility, but nothing to write home about. It was 11 :31 when I cut the fuel and headed off to find the airport authorities. This was a flight I will quickly forget. Happily, a good friend of mine, Chuck, lives here. The last time we met, we really sank a few!
